“I was going to go to the park with Beatrice and Thisbe,” Ramona said, shooting a sharp look at Casset like he shouldn’t have been there for this conversation.

He didn’t entirely disagree, but there weren’t many other places for him to be, so he wasn’t going to feel bad about it, either.

“I’m sorry,” Ruby said. “I know that you haven’t had any opportunity to plan. But I need to be with Mama today.”

“You mean you’re going to spend all day arguing with her to try to make her make us leave, again,” Ramona said.

“I haven’t hidden that I don’t think you should stay,” Ruby said. “But that’s hardly all we’re talking about, and you know it.”

Ramona shot Casset another look.

There was mischief in that look, and calculation.

A lesser man might have been concerned, but he was eager to find out what it meant.

“You mean until dinner, don’t you?” Ramona asked.

“Can I meet the fourth sister, today, or are you going to keep hiding her away?” Casset asked. Ruby shot him a look.

“Do not take him to meet Reba,” Ruby warned, and Ramona shook her head.

“I know,” she said.

Casset widened his eyes.

“Am I really so much of a threat?” he asked.

“Presenting a man to my baby sister would only be appropriate if you were…” Ruby started, choking on the next bit.

“To be married,” Ramona said baldly. “Other than that, Reba only spends time with the boys in her tutor’s class who are her own age and family.”

“I thought I was going to get to meet her,” Casset said.

“If it happens, it will be incidentally,” Ruby said with new composure. “I won’t stop it, but it won’t be because we go looking for her.”

Casset shrugged.

“You guys spend an awful lot of energy on rules,” she said.

“There, I agree with you,” Ramona said. “Take him into the city and just… leave him there. Or with the hill folk. As long as he isn’t here in the palace, no one cares what he does.”

“I will not,” Ruby said. “It will get out who he is, and they will all know that I abandoned him rather than seeing to him while he is here.”

“Do I get a vote, here?” Casset asked.

“No,” both women answered.

He snorted and took a half step back, finding the wall and leaning against it.

“It’s not my problem, what they think of you,” Ramona said.

“It is,” Ruby said.

“Not anymore,” Ramona said. “No one expected you to ever come back. They already think that you’ve abandoned the family and the city. What’s one more… pirate?”

“You told me that you were glad that she was back,” Casset said.

“I am,” Ramona said quickly. “I’m glad to see my sister. I’m glad she’s come home. But she’s leaving again, isn’t she? She’s just going to make everything worse. Everyone had finally forgotten about her. They only talk about her sometimes. Now they’re going to talk about her all the time, again. I have to tell Beatrice and Thisbe.”

“You do,” Ruby said. “And I’m sorry that that’s going to be hard for you.
